1 note It’s not the ‘nice’ guys who bring about real social change. ‘Nice’ guys look nice because the’re conforming. It’s the ‘bad’ guys, who only look nice a hundred years later, that are the real Dynamic force in social evolution. —Lila | Robert M. Pirsig | p185 (via evokit-notes)
1 note awThat’s the theme song of the twentieth century. Is society going to dominate intellect or is intellect going to dominate society? And if society wins, what’s going to be left for intellect? And if intellect wins what’s going to be left of society? …… Intellect is not an extension of society any more than society is an extension of biology. Intellect is going its own way, and in doing so is at war with society, seeking to subjugate society, to put society under lock and key.
….
This has been a century of fantastic intellectual growth and fantastic social destruction. The only question is how long this process can keep on. —Lila | Robert M. Pirsig | p189-190 (via evokit-notes)

2 notes The scientific method is invaluable for understanding the physical properties of the world. No question. But there are any number of ways of seeing the world. The material is only one of them poetry. For example, can tell you things about being human that an understanding of brain chemistry never could. Science and art do very different things. Science can never replace art, mysticism, myth or religion because it is not asking the same questions. Each has their place as a way of seeing. Poets cannot replace scientists and vice versa. Science is good; scientific / materialist dogmatism is not. I find that the two are often confused with each other —Paul Kingsnorth  (via evokit-notes)
